Yes you can! July has warmed up the water in Spa Creek and it’s time to begin the annual fish counts. Two Fridays a month from July to Sept, the Spa Creek Conservancy will be seining at Truxton Park Boat Ramp and recording the types and number of fish and other critters that you pull up from Spa Creek. Be prepared to get a little wet and help for about an hour. Remaining dates are July 20, August 10 and 17, September 7 and 14.

Volunteers are needed to count the fish and record the findings. All are invited to watch and/or participate. The seining begins promptly at 4pm at the boat ramp at Truxtun Park. Click here for more information or email web@spacreek.net.

Even Plants Have a Census

The Biogeochemistry Lab at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) is conducting their annual census of the Global Change Research Wetland, a marsh that SERC scientists have been studying for over 30 years. There are a variety of projects happening, but all of them involve counting and measuring plants in the marsh. They look at the impacts of increased carbon dioxide on plant growth, and combined impacts of increased carbon dioxide and nitrogen on plants. They also look to see whether native and invasive plants are responding to nutrient input in similar or different ways, and the impacts on plants when the soil that they are growing in is warmed. In the beginning, volunteers usually act as data recorders, and then start taking some of the measurements as they become more comfortable. They’d love to have you join in for one or more days!

SERC is looking for volunteer citizen scientists on weekdays from July 23 through August 3 from 8AM to 4PM. Volunteers are needed for a minimum of one full day, but it would be great if people could help out over multiple days. The work involves working in the tidal marsh (on boardwalks) at SERC to count and measure all of the plants in the experimental plots and working in the lab to sort samples and conduct analyses. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old to participate.
