Fall into Volunteering

Foster Grandparents Needed

The Foster Grandparent Program recruits income eligible men and women ages 55+ to volunteer to support children in an educational setting providing academic tutoring in the Anne Arundel County Public Schools. Foster Grandparents must attend training, pass a background check and be able to volunteer at least 20 hours per week. Benefits include a stipend, paid holidays, meals while serving, transportation reimbursement and more. But the greatest benefit of all is the renewed sense of purpose in the lives of volunteers, and that bit of extra love and attention shared with a child.

If you have any questions or know someone who may be interested in the Foster Grandparent Program contact: Anita Green 410-533-3847 Ext.703 or email anita.green@s4sannapolis.org

A Little Homework Help, Please!

Now beginning its 11th year, the Homework and Reading Program at Eastport United Methodist Church offers after-school assistance to elementary and kindergarten children.  Volunteers from the community can help students with their homework; provide the opportunity to strengthen their reading, writing, comprehension, math and analytical skills; and engage in other educational activities such as a board game, a puzzle, or drawings.   Participants meet twice a week:  Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 to 5 p.m. at the church, 926 Bay Ridge Avenue in Annapolis.  The program operates like a “one room schoolhouse”.  Volunteers work with different kids.  So they can come as often as their schedules allow without being concerned about letting down a child.  No special training or credentials are needed.

For more information or to volunteer, contact the church at 410-263-5490 or eastportumc@verizon.net.

Volunteers Needed For Tax Preparation!

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest volunteer-run tax preparation service, is looking to expand its team of volunteers for the upcoming tax season. Tax-Aide, celebrating its 50th year, will be offering free in-person tax preparation and assistance to anyone, especially those who are older or who can’t afford tax preparation, at several sites in Anne Arundel County from Jan – Apr. 2019.

The program is seeking volunteer tax preparers to give advice and prepare tax returns on computers using a program provided by the IRS at each of the sites. In addition, appointment takers and client facilitators are also needed to schedule client appointments and assist clients at these sites. Every level of experience is welcome!

Orientation on tax changes for this year and training for volunteer preparers and client facilitators will be held on several dates from January 9-30, 2019. AARP membership is not required!

Partners in Care

Are you looking for a way to make a difference in your community? Are you seeking opportunities to help others and in doing so, create a network of support for yourself?  Please consider volunteering your time and talents to the Partners In Care community whose mission, for 25 years, has been to support older adults to age in their homes through a unique culture of service exchange; neighbors helping neighbors. Volunteers are needed to provide rides to medical appointments, errands and grocery shopping, small honey-do repairs for safety, friendly visits and phone calls, and office assistance.  Volunteers give their time and may ask for assistance when they have a need. An hour or two a month can make a big difference to those who need assistance and contributes to the well being of the volunteers! Call 410-544-4800 to receive an application and to make a reservation for the next volunteer orientation (Nov 13 or Nov 17th). They hope to see you there!
